We manufacture and sell all-natural pet treats called Brew’ed Biscuits in 3 delicious flavors; Peanut Butter, Pumpkin Sweet Potato and Apple Cinnamon.
Brew’ed Biscuits are an all natural, baked pet treat that is made with spent grains and local farm flavors. Spent Grains are the used Oats and Barley that end up as a waste-product of beer making. We call them used or “Spent” because the grains have been steeped to remove the sugars. What is left is a healthy tasty, human grade low gluten sugar free by-product that is approximately 20% protein and 70% fiber. Spent grains have been a farmers secret as long as beer has been produced. Farmers gladly take this product to supplement feed pretty much every animal on the farm from chickens to cows and horses.
Spent grains account for 85% of the total beer waste-product. This means for every pint of beer drank, approximately 6 tablespoons of spent grains are produced. A small craft brewery that produces 10 hL of beer per week generates 250 kg of spent grains resulting in an overall annual production of 13,000 kg per year. Any grains that do not find a home on a farm are taken to landfills.
Food waste that decomposes in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is at least 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. If even 10% of those spent grains goes to a landfill it will produce approximately 4693 kg of CO2-e. That is the equivalent of approximately 419 days of electricity consumption for one household.
It is our goal to rescue and recycle all homeless grains and bring awareness and innovation to this little known tasty, healthy beer by-product.
